Haskell salt fonksiyonel ve genel maksatlı bir programlama dilidir. Haskell'i birçok programlama dilinden ayıran özellikleri tembel değerlendirme (lazy evaluation), üstün düzen fonksiyonlar (higher order functions), statik tipleme (static typing), parametrik çokbiçimlilik (parametric polymorphism), tip sınıfları ve monad tarzı etkilerdir (monadic effects). Hemen hemen her bilgisayar sistemi için uygun bir Haskell derleyicisi indirmek mümkündür.
