Thanks (I assume you're referring to what I've rewritten, rather than what I've wrote myself ;-). Considering just how much content is here, I didn't think I was making that much of a difference.
I do have a question: has anyone [else] expressed an interest in using CommonMark here?

• I frequently type out CM formatting at first, only to then replace it with what the HsWiki uses now;
• Of course, if MediaWiki is already switching to CM, then the question is academic...

I don't recall anyone expressing an interest in using CommonMark. However, we haven't really solicited suggestions, so this isn't much indication of interest level.

At the moment, you might want to use Pandoc on your own computer to convert your CommonMark to MediaWiki and then paste it into wiki pages. Perhaps we can even set up a converter app on our server to do this. — HowardBGolden (talk) 18:02, 15 March 2021 (UTC)

Heh - I must be one of the few still doing this "directly" (no intervening tools like Pandoc) - I was just curious, considering CM has been around for (at least) 6 years.

Since no-one else has asked for it, I'll just leave it to MediaWiki to decide when/if CM support is added :-)

It's not an error to move 'Nondeterminism'. However, putting your comment on the 'Hawiki migration' page:

14:28, 9 March 2021‎ Atravers (-74)‎ . . (NonDeterminism transferred to "Nondeterminism, monadically")

[Ha$kell] Please do not remove useful work

My dear friend Atravers,

This page "Atribuirea" meaning "Assignment" is part of the Description of a Mini DSL (domain small language) we have used to teach computer science in Romania,for beginners.

Because the course is inactive from this year, there is no activity on the page. Put please do not remove the content related to a well made Haskell project, even if the language implemented is a sort of little C with national keywords, and do not ressamble to Haskell.

It is really very unpleasant to see that your work in a community is removed, would you like to contribute in such conditions ?

I simply merged "Atribuirea" with "Rodin/FAQ", which made the separate page redundant, hence the redirection - why did I do this?

1. https://wiki.haskell.org/Special:WhatLinksHere/Atribuirea shows no other HsWiki pages referring to Atribuirea";

2. https://wiki.haskell.org/index.php?title=Atribuirea&action=history shows the last change was made on 05:49, 11 February 2011‎: over 10 years ago.

From my side of the Internet, it just looked like an abandoned page...

Some other points of contention:

• I did not use your user page as a complaints box;

• Your user name - "Ha$kell" - looks like the handiwork of a spammer; (why not "Dpopa"?)

• This wiki is a Haskell community resource, not an advertising billboard - if you want to indulge in gimmicks like:

(Curious: that banner doesn't appear here...)

or:

(...your impression of an infinite loop in Haskell?)

...then ask [the IT department at] the Universitatea_Bacau about setting up a local Haskell wiki (you've certainly promoted them enough!); you can then add all the novelties you like :-D

Separate "page spaces" for each language on the HsWiki

Hello Howard;

What would be required to have something like:

* https://wiki.haskell.org/ro/
* https://wiki.haskell.org/jp/
* https://wiki.haskell.org/ru/
* https://wiki.haskell.org/en/

so that pages can be better organised by language?

Currently, if you point your browser at e.g.

https://wiki.haskell.org/fr/

which would be an actual directory, the server merely redirects you to

https://wiki.haskell.org/Fr/

...another wiki page - to quote the warning from the "Edit" page;

If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then don't submit it here.

At the very least, deleting a directory of (links to) wiki pages takes more effort than a single wiki page (for regular users, anyway)...

Mostly-complete list of pages on the HsWiki

Hello again, Howard;

I've been using the Special:Random link to examine (and occasionally edit) pages, so as a result pages I've already looked at are frequently brought up. As I dimly recall, some early websites (no wiki) had the "big index" page - one page with links to every other page on the site.

Now (obviously) such a page for a wiki-site would never be completely accurate (new pages being made, old ones removed, etc) but a reasonable approximation would still be useful: I could save it (as text) to a local file and use it as a "to-do list", deleting each entry as I go.

Being generated content, the simplest approach would be a link to a plain-text file, which can be downloaded for offline use.

[HowardBGolden] Hi Atravers (MediaWiki upgrades)

I recently upgraded the server for wiki.haskell.org to Ubuntu 20.04, and this came with updated MediaWiki (to 1.31), PHP (to 7.4) and Mariadb (to 10.3). Due to a configuration problem, the upgrade wasn't smooth and the wiki was down for approx. 8 hours. I apologize for any difficulty you may have experienced because of this. I expect to continue to upgrade the wiki software to MediaWiki 1.35 in the near future, first on a separate port for testing and then into production. I don't expect more downtime other than a brief reboot, since I will use a better testing process first. In the meantime, I wanted to reach out to you to see if you notice now or in the near term any problems with the wiki since the upgrade. Please let me know anything unusual you notice.

Also, if you have any requests or suggestions, please send them to me. I'd like to try to improve the wiki as part of the coming upgrade. Thanks! — HowardBGolden (talk) 20:00, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

I had guessed as much from noticing the changes to the editor page. As for oddities, https://wiki.haskell.org/index.php?title=User_talk:Atravers&oldid=64876&diff=cur results in a "Bad Gateway" error (like what happens if the "Show changes" button is pressed in the editor page). P.S: I'm not doing so much here at the moment; I'm mostly tending to what new pages I've added or existing pages that still interest me - there'll be less feedback for now. The "Bad Gateway" error is caused by a segfault inside of MediaWiki. I'm trying to find and fix the problem. — HowardBGolden (talk) 16:41, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Current situation with minimal edit previews

Howard,

Since May, previews for edits have been rendered in some form of "debugging mode": the content presentation is mostly text-and-punctuation, and a statistics table appears at the bottom.

• Does this have anything to do with the failed PHP upgrade?

• Has there been any progress towards resolving the problem?

I noticed the way previews look after the May upgrade, but I have been more focused on a successful upgrade, so I didn't dig into the cause of the change in the presentation of edit previews. I will look at it right away. — HowardBGolden (talk) 15:29, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

Howard: if this issue doesn't have a quick solution and I'm the only one who's wondering about it...I should have realised earlier that this could merely be due to this version of MediaWiki (1.31) being used with an older version of PHP (7.2). If there are no other complaints about it, let's wait and see what happens with the next versions of MediaWiki and PHP (I've now more-or-less completed my most recent "subtask" anyway).
